A diamond necklace or bracelet is one of the easiest pieces of fine jewellery to give. There is rarely a size to guess, it suits almost any wardrobe, and it is worn — not kept in a drawer for occasions. The hard part is choosing the style. Here is how each one wears, and who it tends to suit.
The tennis necklace
A continuous line of diamonds, each set in its own claws, running all the way around. It is the most generous of the necklaces — light from every angle — and it moves like fabric because every stone sits on its own link.
It suits someone who likes one bold piece rather than several small ones, and it looks as right with a white shirt as with an evening dress. Browse tennis necklaces.

The pendant
A single stone, or a small cluster, on a fine chain. A pendant is the quietest way to wear a diamond every day, and the easiest to layer with other necklaces. It is a natural first piece of fine jewellery, and a good choice when you are not sure of someone’s taste — almost everyone wears a pendant. Browse pendants.
The station necklace
Diamonds spaced along a chain, with lengths of chain between them, so each stone works as a station. It sits between a pendant and a tennis line: more sparkle than a single stone, lighter and more relaxed than a full line. It suits someone who wears jewellery every day and likes it to feel effortless. Browse station necklaces.
The lariat
A long necklace without a conventional clasp at the front, finished with a drop that falls down the neckline. It is the most fashion-led of the four — for someone who likes a little drama, and who wears open necklines. Browse lariat necklaces.
The tennis bracelet
The bracelet version of the tennis line: a flexible row of diamonds that sits close to the wrist. It is the piece people tend to wear every day once they own one, alone or stacked with a watch. Browse tennis bracelets.

Choosing the metal
Look at the jewellery they already wear. White gold and platinum read cool and bright; yellow gold is warm and traditional; rose gold has a soft blush and is forgiving. If they wear a watch every day, its colour is usually the best clue. Our metals guide explains how each one wears.
