Diamonds are hard; settings are not. Most of looking after fine jewellery is looking after the metal that holds the stones — keeping it clean, keeping it out of harm’s way, and having it checked now and then. None of it takes long.
Cleaning, the simple way
Everyday life leaves a film on a diamond — soap, lotion, the oils from your skin. It sits on the back of the stone, where light enters, and dulls it. Taking it off is easy:
- A bowl of warm water with a drop of mild soap.
- Let the piece sit for a few minutes.
- Brush gently with a soft brush, paying attention to the back of the stones and the spaces between claws and links.
- Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth.
That is all. Done every week or two, it will look like the day it arrived. Avoid harsh household cleaners, bleach and anything abrasive — they are hard on metal and plating.

When to take it off
Most damage happens during ordinary activity, not accidents. Take rings off for the gym, the pool, the garden and the beach. Chlorine and salt water are unkind to metal; weights, tools and sand are unkind to settings. Put jewellery on last, after lotion, perfume and hairspray, and take it off first.
Storing it
Diamonds can scratch other diamonds and other jewellery. Keep each piece apart — a soft pouch or a lined box with separate compartments. Fasten necklaces and bracelets before you put them away, so the chains do not knot.
Tennis necklaces and bracelets
A line of stones moves with every link, which is what makes it so comfortable to wear. Every so often, check the clasp closes firmly, and look along the line for a stone that sits differently from its neighbours. If something looks loose, stop wearing the piece and let us see it.
White gold, and why it is re-plated
White gold is gold alloyed white and finished with rhodium, which gives it its bright, cool colour. With wear, the rhodium softens and a little warmth shows through. That is normal, and it is easily refreshed.
What we look after for you
Some things are better done at the bench. With every piece, for as long as you own it:
- Cleaning and inspection at our atelier, complimentary.
- Retipping — worn claws rebuilt so your stones stay held.
- Rhodium — white gold re-plated so it stays bright.
- Manufacturing faults — our responsibility.
The details are in the lifetime promise. A routine inspection is the easiest way to catch a loose stone early, before it becomes a lost one.
